FireWire 2.1 can improve the performance of FireWire hard disk drives, when used with a corresponding software update from the drive vendor.

The iMac CD Firmware Update reduces the amount of vibration caused by certain CDs in the internal CD-ROM drive. This vibra- tion is typically caused by unbalanced CDs when spinning at higher speeds in the internal CD-ROM drive. This vibration may cause the drive to have difficulty reading the CD.The iMac CD Firmware Update application places new firmware on the CD-ROM Drive to reduce the amount of disc vibration.
iMac Firmware Update 1.2
The iMac Firmware Update version 1.2 should be installed on all iMac computers used in NetBoot client environments. Features delivered with this update include improved support of NetBooting and minor improvements to Open Firmware for Mac OS X Server. The update also corrects a rare condition wherein SGRAM amounts over 2MB may not be properly identified at startup.
G3 Firmware Update
The Power Macintosh G3 Firmware Update version 1.1 should be installed on all blue & white Power Macintosh G3 or Macintosh Server G3 systems. Features delivered with this update include improved performance of PCI devices including built-in FireWire ports, improved support of NetBooting, and minor improvements to Open Firmware for Mac OS X Server.
G3 CD Updater 1.0
The G3 CD Update places new firmware on certain CD-ROM drive mechanisms. This new firmware eliminates an issue of long delays occurring during wakeup from sleep. This wakeup problem has only been observed in certain types of Power Macintosh G3 models, with a certain model of CD-ROM drive.
